PRINCESS HIJAB: "A naughty girl with a bad habit"

Who is Princess Hijab or more importantly what is Princess Hijab about ? She is known as an unseen character “fighting for a cause” by subverting commercial images within the public sphere. The French artist behind Princess Hijab “hijabizes” adverts by drawing black hijabs onto subway posters of celebrities or models and also fly-posts streets with the ‘Hijab-ad’ prints of a young veiled woman. Her street art, and more significantly her NetArt (animated GIFs; social networks such as MySpace, Flickr, etc) have attracted international media attention and have also generated a great deal of public interest.

‘Princess Hijab’ artwork is often regarded as unsettling or even disturbing because it challenges and questions political and social issues relating to female
gender and identity. Her controversial art cleverly plays on the boundaries between social determinism and individual freedom hrough the symbol of the veil: where does one’s free choice of personal expression supersede the influence of our consumer society? The transvestite image of a half-naked Dior woman whose eyes shine out of a black veil is strikingly intriguing and ambiguous. The hijab intensifies the expression in the eyes, thus veiling certain human attributes while uncovering others.
But what can be said of the artwork in itself? In all likelihood, we are entering a new dawn of art which is so democratic it circulates at an incredible speed on the web and takes on an organic life of its own. Evidently, many artists (such as ArtRebels and the fashion-designer Girbaux’s campaign 2008, bellow) have been directly inspired by the iconic graphism of Princess Hijab, using her as a symbol of anti-conformism in the urban trend of “Guerrilla Art”.

The Princess has clearly become an iconic figure of rebellion for the hooded graffitti artist. One might say Internet is the perfect public/private sphere for people to express themselves without infringing on others, but for art to reach out shouldn’t it contain an element of violence?

Princess Hijab’s strength is that she makes people think. She makes people of all ages and class think about religion, identity, politics, ethics, philosophy and art. She triggers endless debates on issues relating to all these subjects on Internet. As for her own beliefs, what she is mainly interested in is her artwork and its impact on society. The artist states: “Princess Hijab is the allegory of a matrix”. This must mean that she generates a profusion of ideas, energy and creation. So beyond the positive or negative connotations of the veil, the Princess is representative of the symbolist, evolutionary but also cyclical nature of art. However the artist, whose fame has considerably grown through the use of Internet, admits she is disheartened about other artists copying and selling her specific imagery. But the world of art as well as Internet are inevitably two-sided: as an artist’s recognition grows he also inspires, influences or might one say ‘impregnates’ other artists. In all likelihood, the artist’s creation – Princess Hijab – has spun out of control into the sphere of collective symbols. The artist is thus experiencing an inner battle between wanting others to take part in her art and then her own hubris is drawing the princess back into her inner being. After all, she does mention: “she is a schizophrenic, by day she is pure and by night she is out to avenge herself”, which obviously replicates the daily activities of the artist. What is more, the artist explains that PH has internalised the allegory of the veiled woman which transpires in her attitude of being a secret, shadowy woman, pulling all the strings. She has proclaimed that “the act of murderring images is a contemporary concept”. Could her iconoclastic acts of violence be a reaction to the omnipresence of images in our society?

At the height of her art, the artist flooded her MySpace page with animated GIFs in which a pink unicorn or else a pack of wolves are set along side the Princess. She mentions that the pink unicorn is a “Geek atheist symbol” within Internet culture. The artist describes Princess Hijab as a “meme”, or in other words, “a recurring symbol”. The unicorn is also a symbol of feminine sensual spirituality and the wolves could symbolise Man’s wilder impulses. The artist explains that she chose these symbols, which belong to the realm of mythology and popular culture, in order to remove the hijab from its Muslim context and reinvest it with a “Pop dimension”. These two symbols are also evocative of her split self which is sublime and innocent by day but untamed and murderous by night. She is an oddity alright, a living paradox, a figure of divine wonder, transgression and metamorphosis. Cocorosie was undoubtedly inspired by PH in her video clip in which animated GIFs combine the hijab with the unicorn in electrifying colour compositions.

To understand Princess Hijab’s art is to question the incongruities of our society. In this era of extreme visual marketing, Princess Hijab explores notions of space and representation, challenging people’s ideas on normative types of representations with the distinctive black veil. Her work is the living example of how symbolist imagery is woven in or out of the social landscape in order to question its motley texture through art.

Not only because Armenians are the oldest Christian nation in the world. Armenia became the first country to adopt Christianity as the official state religionin 301 AD. Every Christian must see the Ararat at least once in his life.

Any story about Armenia would not be complete without a few words about its people. Armenians count for 97 percent of the entire population and are famous for Caucasian hospitality.'' A famous guidebook says, "Sometimes, the desire of the local people to help a foreigner becomes so strong and intense that manyscare the latter, especially the young, who often insist too vigorously to make a foreigner join their party and share a few glasses of wine.''

The rich and dynamic history of the country, deeply rooted in Christianity, has made a deep impact on Armenia's monuments. Boasting that it was the firstcountry to adopt Christianity, monasteries and temples can be found all over the country.

Famous English poet Lord Byron said the following about Armenia: "Thiscountry is to remain arguably as the most interesting one on the whole Earth.'' Not many small countries can boast such compliments from such well-known, well-traveled people.

Armenia is a safe country for tourists. The biggest "danger'' for a foreigner is overeating.

The Armenians' desire to show hospitality leads them to offer guests countless dishes, making it impossible to eat them all. The problem is that the local food is so tasty and those offering it to you are sincere.

The Cross Stones - Armenian cross stones (khachkars) are a vivid, sanguineous phenomena in medieval art. Crosses, carved on stelae long ago beginning fromthe 5-6th centuries, serving as memorial or exhortational monuments in Christiancountries, were known to Egypt, Northern Caucasus, Europe and northern Russia. In Armenia, however, khachkars are embodied with an especially rich artistic content and are valuable achievements in Armenian monumental art.

Armenian Brandy - from 1953 until 1991 YBC was the only plant that produced Armenian brandy. The remaining plants of Armenia were occupied solely by distillation. YBC bottled ordinary (three -, four- and five-year) brandy's as well as the famous labelled brands ("Dvin", "Yerevan", "Nairi", "Vaspurakan", "Ararat"and "Akhtamar"). YBC's monopoly to bottle and export brandy was liquidated in1991. For more than 20 years (from 1948 through 1973) the chief technologist ofYBC was Markar Setrakyan. YBC was privatized in 1998 and was sold to the international group "Pernod Ricard".

Where has the tasty bread gone in Tbilisi ?

Georgia, a short time ago still famous for the tasty bread, must be in a deep crisis. The good bread is gone ! There was still good bread all over Tbilisi 4-5 years ago, but now very rarely to find. There is no bread to eat anymore in Old Town, what is not sticky, tasteless, ugly and worthless. I started to complain in the small shops nearby, to change bread deliverers, without any success so far.

That is indeed a crisis, when taste, quality and performance of bread is loosing so fast in a land with thousands of years in bakery tradition.

I think of importing my bread from other regions of Georgia, allthough there bread seems to be also an endangered species. One of the best breads you can get is made in the village Kvemo Alvani, not far from Alaverdi Church in Northern Kakheti. See image above. That bread is still tasty after 3-4 days, but of course the best, when still warm ;-)

"Earliest structures of Alaverdi (Geo. ალავერდი) monastery date back to 6th century. The present day surviving cathedral is part of an 11th century Georgian Orthodox monastery. Located in 20 km from Telavi, in the Kakheti region of Eastern Georgia.

The Monastery was founded by the Assyrian monk Joseph (Yoseb, Amba) Alaverdeli, who came from Antioch and settled in Alaverdi, then a small village and the former pagan religious center dedicated to moon. At the beginning of XI century Kakhetian King Kvirike the Great built a cathedral in the place of a small church of St. George, which today is know as Alaverdi Cathedral. Alaverdi is the second tallest, after the recently consecrated Tbilisi Sameba Cathedral, religious building in the country and its height is more than 55 meters."

A short test booking online I found convenient, clear and easy and for a Return flight from Frankfurt on June, 16 to Tbilisi and back from Tbilisi to Frankfurt on June, 30 the system gave me a price of EUR 492,77 for one adult including taxes.

when I look in the logfiles of this blog, I see from where are visitors coming, like searching for this and that, and visitors are coming from "common" countries like Belgium, Poland, Austria, Germany, Canada or France, but then my eye stops and sees there a "uncommon" and "rare" visitor from Ecuador ? Who is that ? Who is there in Ecuador interested in the Caucasus (of course there are probably many !) but it happens rarely here.

I start thinking and suddenly I realize, yeah, it's JÜRGEN, my buddy from Samarkand,Uzbekistan, from Essen !

Hey Jürgen, nice to feel your track here in the Caucasian Internet Ravines and my best wishes to you and for a great 2009 over there at the hot pacific beaches at Ecuador ! Thanks for your letter ! Tomorrow we fly to Germany for a late Christmas, I hope to answer soon. Heiner

About Georgia and (little) Wonders

Occasionally I tell my guests, that Georgia is a special country, where wonders are happening much more often than elsewhere. Mostly they don't believe me at firsthand and I start to explain about what happend then or then miraculous under the most unbelievable circumstances.

Today happened two little wonders, they probably happen all over the world too, but it let me think, about Georgia, the little country near the paradise where happen very often smaller and bigger wonders... ;-)

I had a guest today in my studio, when she left, we went together to catch a Taxi for her at Leselidze Street. We stopped a red Mercedes Taxi, and she left for her home. After 20 minutes she called me back, if she had maybe lost her keys in my place, I checked everything, nothing. Another 20 minutes later calls me an unknown caller, tells me he is the Taxi Driver, if I know about a foreign woman etcetera, he brought her the keys, and I was wondering, where did this friendly man get my cell phone number from... ? No idea.

Another foreign acquintence, who did me a favour, I specially met today to give him a little present for Christmas, to say thank you. It was an A4 print of one of my Caucasus Map Drawings, made in Spring this year. When opening the envelope, he was very curious and told me, "Ah you are the one doing this drawings, strange, yesterday I had been at a party and saw one of these series in that hosts apartment. Asking from who it was, they couldn't tell exactly, except some German guy living in Tbilisi, called Hans.

A love affair with Georgian lemons

One needs to taste a Georgian lemon from the Regions Adjara and Guria close to the Black Sea to know what a real lemon is. It's such an amazing aroma, an exhilarating scent you'll never forget. Georgian lemons look slightly different than "normal lemons" a bit greener, a colder yellow, the skin is more glossy. If you are in Georgia right now, lemons from Georgia could be a nice uncommon present to your beloved at Christmas ;-)
